Whenever Spanish, Italian and Greek food is discussed we get onto the subject of the so called "Mediterranean diet". The actual content of this diet varies considerably amongst the countries surrounding the Mediterranean sea although the basic food groups remain the same. It involves extensive intake of fruits, vegetables, bread and cereals, potatoes, beans, nuts and seeds. Olive oil is a source of mono-unsaturated fat which is common throughout the Mediterranean area and is a crucial element in the diet. Some dairy products, fish and poultry are consumed in moderate amounts as well as small amounts of red meat. An added bonus to this great way of eating is that wine is recognised as another integral part of the diet. For more information about Mediterranean diet recipes and cook books read further.

In Valencia province it's one of Spain's maddest festivals with the La Tomatina tomato fight in Bunyol whilst in Cambados (Galicia) it's the Albariño wine fair where you can sample some of Galicia's finest white wines. In Elche it's the Mystery Play which is one of the country's oldest festivals.

"When I first moved to Spain as a naive 24 year old I had no concept of Spanish history. To me Spain was little more than a place people went on their summer holidays. One day near the village of Pollensa in Mallorca I stumbled upon a little Roman bridge which really opened my eyes to the fascinating world of Spanish history that was about to unfold. In the city of Palma de Mallorca the cathedral was most impressive but it wasn't until years later that I learned that this cathedral had been constructed on the site of the city's mosque. Such a pattern I found to be common especially in Andalucia where Roman sites were used by the Moors to construct their mosques which were later converted into cathedrals after the Christian reconquest.
